Lewis Perry Curtis was born in Southport, Connecticut on November 30, 1900. He graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1923; Ph.D. 1926) and joined the Yale faculty in 1927. Curtis was a prominent member of the faculty until 1969, teaching in the English and History Departments. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Division of History-Arts and Letters, and served as its director from 1956-1961.
